Aruna Sairam is a Carnatic vocalist, Padma Shri awardee, and Vice Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. She has performed across India and abroad, and is on a mission to make South Indian classical music global. She was the first South Indian classical vocalist to perform at the BBC Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall in 116 years, and she's also the first Carnatic musician to perform in the Oud Festival of Israel (Jerusalem).
Some of Aruna Sairam's many awards include: Sangeetha Kalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy, U S Congress Proclamation of Excellence, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from the Government of India. She was also appointed as Advisor to the Department of Culture, Tamil Nadu, on Musical Education by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
